The technology question is an interesting one. After being upset that my child was making a soundtrack for his english project (isn't he supposed to learn to write?) I was amazed at how thoroughly he studied the book to pick the right music for the right moment. He learned how to compose basic music and incorporated classical as well as rock. Who is to say he did not pick up knowledge and skills he will use in the future?

Therefore, whether a teacher chooses to focus on technology, the arts, or "basics" like spelling and grammar, DonorsChoose.org can help ensure that she has the resources she needs to bring classroom learning to life. In this way, we entrust teachers to determine exactly what students need - making classroom and perhaps student to student decisions on what that right "balance" between technology and basics should be.

Do you think that there is too much emphais on technology in our schools? Should we perhaps get back to the basics of spelling, grammar, etc? And how do we strike a balance between those basics and the need to keep pace with the times we live in?

According to my sister who is an elementary school teacher, many students cannot read at grade level in part because they have not had the exposure at home. She believes that in addition to classroom instruction, students need books -- and lots of them -- to practice with at home and at school.

DonorsChoose.org brings to life innovative classroom projects, effective, rigorous, lessons and eye-opening experiences that would otherwise be impossible at many of our schools. On DonorsChoose.org, any public school teacher can request the materials their students need to have a successful school year. In many cases, these resources are the items that could make a real difference, but are outside of their school's available budget. By funneling these resources to students on a teacher by teacher basis, DonorsChoose.org supports great instruction, one classroom at a time, at America's public schools. -- Edited by Hope4OurSchools at 12/01/2008 1:03 PM PST -- Edited by admin at 12/02/2008 8:39 AM PST

What are the educational challenges for our nation’s children that Donors Choose could help address? -- Edited by admin at 12/02/2008 8:37 AM PST

Yes Indeed education should be a primary focus since this is a good agent for change. Literacy is very important for a developing country like the Philippines where I come from.

Great project and very well needed. Unfortunately it is often the teachers who pay for all of the supplies themselves to make up the difference and this can really help!

As a classroom teacher who regularly uses Donorschoose.com, I am deeply pleased to see how many people voted and supported this cause. Donorschoose.com brings much needed supplies to our most needy classrooms. Bravo, American Express!

I'm so pleased with all the winners, it really shows what a lot of us care about -= helping children in school, getting food to hungry children, helping people get loans, and Alzheimer's disease. I truly believe even a little bit of caring goes a long way, it helps those giving and those receiving. Yippee, this has made my day, and we need some good news.

I am so glad this cause was in the top 2. If we don't educate our children, how can we hope to continue the American Heritage? I believe this is so very important and I am proud to be able to participate.
