Email Your Congressmen About The Need for Increased Funding!

Posted Aug 29, 2008 2:39 PM
I love this project and would like to make a suggestion, which I saw on the StandUp2Cancer.org website. One thing we can do is to email our Congressmen about the need for increased funding for medical research. There's a template letter provided at: standup2cancer/getinvolved/congress

I will be sending the above website to everyone on my email list.

The best of luck with this "Fund Research Science" Project!!!

Congrats on your initiative. I work with a small children's charity called Jacob's Cure (jacobscure)( which funds research to find a cure for a rare, fatal brain disease called Canavan Disease. According to the government it is an "orphan" disease so does not therefore receive federal funding and we must rely on private donations. NIH grants are disappearing by the day and smaller, worthy causes are struggling.

I think it is important to band together and share scientific work and continue to pressure the government to increase budgets. Best of luck with your project!!

Advertising is expensive

You have a very interesting idea and I think it goes without saying that we would all like to see cures to major diseases faster. As an advertising executive, I must tell you that $1.5MM will not make a dent in communicating with the whole population. To put it in perspective, that will buy a few primetime TV spots or maybe a few dozen magazine ads. Many new products spend $20-30MM in advertising to reach people with their message in the first year alone. The avg TV spot costs $400K to produce. I am not suggesting your project is not worthy. I am merely suggesting that your execution plan should include lining up both ad agencies and media outlets that are willing to work on a pro-bono basis to support the effort. In addition, the money would be well spent on viral internet activities...spreading the word at low/no cost. Best of luck for this interesting idea.

That a good idea. I will contact the administrators. I hope that nominations will not be the ONLY criteria.

Could this project also be listed or cross-referenced in some way in the category of Health projects? I'm wondering if more people might see it there.

This project has the potential to help various illnesses and raise awareness about the need for increased funding for medical research.

Medical Research

I understand the unpopularity of medical research, but as person working very closely with researh scientists, it is imparitive that they have the resources needed to cure these horrible diseases. What the uneducated person does not understand about research is it does not only benifit people, but animals as well. I have lost people very close to me to Alzheimer's and have no greater wish then to see a cure for this horrible disease. I applaud you for having the forthought to see that research is a great starting point.

FUND RESEARCH SCIENCE

First, I'd like to say that there are a lot of great projects proposed here.

My project asks for funding for a campaign designed to increase medical research funding. This is vital if we hope to cure diseases and train future scientists.

I propose that if each person in the US contributes $1, this would amount to an increase of the NIH's budget by 300 million dollars. I believe that with an effective campaign using newspapers and radio ads, awareness to this problem can be brought to the forefront. Perhaps then the general public will realize that each small contribution will allow researchers to concentrate on science (rather than the funding crisis).

Any small increase to the research budget will result in optimism among current scientists and encourage our future researchers.

Funding this project will not ensure that we can increase medical research funding, but sitting still or waiting for political change is not an answer.
