Does pay it forward have to be a monetary contribution? Couldn't it be a contribution of your time? Would that be more valuable to the receiver? A smile, a hug, an encouraging word, a heart that has passion and wants to reach out, be it at the local retirement home, Veterans' Center, animal shelter would certainly be well received and appreciated. Is this what has been missing in our culture?

I don't know that its an inspiration but I am concerned about our economy and how children and families in need will survive this down turn.

Just think, if everyone decided to pay it forward - just a tiny bit - what a HUGE difference it would make in the lives of many. I think many of us are not going to be able to support the charities / agencies this holiday season in the manner we have done in the past. But my little bit, along with your little bit, and on and on - people would be touched in so many, meaningful ways. AND the donors would be touched also!

The principle of "pay it forward" inspires me. I've been lucky enough to
benefit from that idea, and have believed in it for some time.
Positivity breeds positivity. You feel better for it, and you're helping someone in the process.
Keep it moving!!

CM733196,
How can you teach others to take joy in the small victories to spread those ripples? Giving one person more self-esteem may seem a small act, but can swell into a tsunami, "save one person and you save the world entire in time."

I am inspired by the work I get to do with people in disadvantaged and low-income communities who do not have the benefit of partaking in the socio-economic advantages of the larger society. For instance, the stress levels in these communities are extraordinary, yet people cannot afford vacations, weekly massages, or other amenities that tend to give a break. I get to go into some of these communities and facilitate creative options for how people can care for their children in stressful and economically challenged times. Or to inspire those children who have given up on themselves and are simply marching in place. And to have them tap into their own creativity and ensure their individual, family and community inspiration and success in spite of circumstances.

That inspires me and motivates me to want to do more!

People over all are inspiring and have a kind heart, occasionally they need to be reminded of such and that comes when all band together in a situation where help is needed such as hurricanes, tornados, fires or a health situation when additional blood is needed or when a complete stranger donates a body part to someone in need. Also not to be left out is a song with just the right words, a speech, and a ministers message.

In general people showing kindness to each other, helping a neighbor, a veteran, a handicapped person or a person in need.

What inspires me is hearing about the little deliberate acts of kindness perpetrated by every day people in ever day situations.

Being in the midst of the holiday season, we tend to see more and more of these acts. I wish it would carry over more into the rest of the year.

These are all wonderful responses. I guess what inspires me is reconnecting children to the earth, their history and heritage.

Its so important when it comes to kids because they really don't have the same understanding of why they are sick that adults to.

What do you do with kids?

Well, I messed up a bit and doubled the last posting. So I have cleared this one and hope that we can get some interesting discussion going on about health care records and the value to the community and do some serious Outcomes Research (quality of life and longevity) as to what is effective in community health and what is not.

I have been working with WorldVistA, a not-for-profit which is bringing the Veterans' Administrations' Electronic Medical Record out into Open Source and away from politics. This software is available for free down-load and we are anxious to teach nearly anybody about this technology and how it can be the core of a universal electronic medical record for anybody. We have been doing this for the last 6 years out of our own pockets and the kind support of a lot of former VA, Department of Defense, and Indian Health Service software folks. We have gotten some community beginning to install the VistA software in community hospitals and clinics. This software has been running the VA hospitals for over 30 years and have 30 years of patient history on-line for patients coming to VA hospitals. This code has adapted to the changing environment and been adopted by no less than 2 other government agencies. This software is available under the Freedom Of Information Act, but made usable by our not-for-profit and the community. There are powerful forces in motion to stop us, but the strength of the community will prevail. The community is extending the VistA model to fit new problems as these problems make themselves known. Come and check out our community at; worldvista and hardhats . We welcome any who wish to help with the growing of this community. VistA is a process and not a single frozen application. There are more than 160 different aspects of this healthcare package which includes email, HL-7 Messaging, and a really sophisticated Graphical User Interface. This is extremely flexible and extensible to nearly any application. VistA will run on some very simple PCs or major servers. Lots of new functionality is being planned, internationality, Holographic Medical Records, and Serialization of International date and time, webification, and network failure tolerance of the applications so that the transaction between the patient and his doctor can continue. You asked about my passions, and these are some...

I have been involved with helping sick children and giving them a voice and a chance. It's important to help those in need.
