Hydroponic Meat for a Sustainable Planet Earth

Every novel innovation must cross the psychological threshold of consumer acceptance. Hydroponic meat is no exception. To demonstrate why the global population will embrace hydroponic meat as a dietary staple, I would like to draw an analogy to another common globally accepted food staple. Most would never consider eating bacteria cultures in grown in the laboratory as appetizing, however we are eager to consume bacteria cultures from the grocery store cultured as yogurt. When produced for human consumption, hydroponic meat will not be produced in a laboratory but a streamlined production facility intended for this purpose analogous to many other foods we eat including bread, wine, tofu and cheese. Furthermore, hydroponic meat would be cultivated as a meat "equivalent". It will look, cook, smell and taste like conventional meat. It will be sold in the same refrigeration section at the grocery store right beside the conventional l meat. It will be actual meat but better with no bones, no grizzle and an enhanced nutrition profile. When the consumer realizes these advantages and has the opportunity to cook and taste hydroponic meat first hand, it will find widespread acceptance. Production must first precede consumption. Thus, funding this hydroponic meat R&D initiative is a crucial step. Lastly, in a news release dated today, Sunday September 7th, the UN Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change advises reduced consumption of meat to mitigate climate change. See the link below for the full article: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7600005.stm This recommendation will only be effective so long as a large percentage of the global population decides to cut meat out of their diets. This recommendation however, contradicts the current per capita increasing global trends in meat consumption in nations such as the US and China. As hydroponic meat acceptance does not require a dietary lifestyle change, it offers a realistic strategy to reduce the environmental impact of traditional meat consumption. -- Edited by CM052631 at 09/07/2008 5:35 PM PDT

I think this a great, innovative project that has the potential to help people, the environment, and the animals as well. I truly hope and pray you get the funding needed to get this important project off the ground. Like it or not, this is the future and we just can't keep going the way we have been.

I appreciate the insightful commentary. You’ve brought up some important points I’d like to address. Among beef and dairy cattle, the majority are raised for beef. Thus, beef cattle have the greatest environmental impact. As of July 1st, 2008 there were an estimated 33.2 million beef cattle vs. 9.25 million milk cattle inventoried in the United States. (USDA statistics) It is also worthwhile to note that production of the dairy and beef industries are tightly linked. Dairy heifers must give birth to calves every 12 to 14 months to ensure maximal lactation. Male calves are typically sold and processed as veal. Spent dairy heifers are processed and sold as beef. Ultimately though, cultivation platform technologies developed for hydroponic meat production will have the potential to be applied across agricultural disciplines for other purposes such as dairy and leather production. An essential objective of this initiative is to culture hydroponic meat in a medium free of serum or other animal products. Hydroponic meat will be cultured from stem cells. The differentiation pathways comprising the cell lineages constituting the hydroponic meat have already been established. Necessary growth factors and nutrients would be added as required for the development of the culture. However, this will not be a safety issue as these factors are necessary for the natural growth and development of the animal and are already present in meat originating from slaughter. Furthermore, the hydroponic meat cultivation process must be approved by the FDA for safety prior to human consumption of the final product. When considering the health implications of hydroponic meat, it is important to compare to the alternative. Slaughter meat must be thoroughly cooked prior to consumptions to kill endogenous pathogenic bacteria (e.g. salmonella, campylobacter) which often lead to food poisoning. In contrast, hydroponic meat will be cultivated in an isolated sterile environment free of such pathogens. Of significance to global heath, hydroponic meat would be incapable of spreading infectious diseases such as avian influenza and mad cow disease. The respective host respiratory and neurological tissues capable of harboring these diseases are not co-cultured. Given these health advantages, hydroponic meat may very well be the new standard of safety in food production. Hydroponic meat is a novel solution to the multi-faceted issues associated with traditional meat production. Though there will be challenges, this is the essence and purpose of research and development. As you stated, “the start is the first step to the accomplishment of a goal”. I couldn’t agree more.

Personally, I'm not a vegetarian and have no reservations about eating animal meat. However, I still support this project as it explores a sustainable way to feed a growing population without a destruction of our environment. Have lots of questions, but can't find a detailed proposal to read. My concerns are: What proportion of a livestock is grown for meat in comparison to milk, and, subsequently, how great will be the enviromental impact of reducing the meat livestock? Will animal products (such as serum) be used to produce this hydroponic product? It defines a balance between using animals/saving animals. Will it be treated with hormones and growth factors instead of using a serum, and how safe it will be then? It will be very challenging, but the start is the first step to the accomplishment of the goal. Good luck, wish you'll be funded.

I think this project has lots of potential. If we can combine tissue engineering and genetic engineering, we can make many different types of "food" for meatlovers. A beef jerky with Mango flavor, yeah, it is doable! I strongly advocate the project because the following reasons: As the Virgle project suggest, one day we are going to move to other planets and colonize. For example, water has been found on the Mars. Are we going to raise cows on Mars, unlikely. But we can use tissue engineering to grow hydroponic meat on Mars. The global warming is hitting us. We are living in a unstable climate. The weather in certain region may become very cold or very hot, which may affect farming negatively. Hydroponic meat production stabilize the supply chain for food industry and restaurants. We are at an era of personalized medicine. Hydroponic meat initiative will possibly lead to technologies that combining tissue engineering, genetic engineering, and protein engineering. Thus, we may infuse personalized medication into the hydroponic food. The hydroponic food can be specifically designed according to individual's genetic background and predilection to certain disease. After all, I think it is a project of a lot potential and need to be done by someone with a big vision. Eddie

Apart from the fact that the purpose of this venture is very noble and deserves all the possible support, I think that it is a very interesting project from scientific point of view. If right now there are some developed tissue engineering technologies around, I don’t see the reason why they could not be successfully applied for this particular purpose.

I can only wish to CM052631 from Alabama all the best for his/her research that could really revolutionise the way we eat and most of all, the way we live! While I was reading the remit of the project, I felt really emotional thinking at the endless benefits that its success could bring to human life. So, GOOD LUCK mate, I truly wish you to succeed in your quest, hoping that one day your name will be remembered for having changed the way we live this world! Here in Leeds (UK) you have a supporter that will spread the word about your project : ) All the best, Roberta

I have often considered the logistics and possibilities of farming animal protein without barbaric slaughter. Your project could very well be the catalyst that is responsible for moving our evolving human race into an era of even a higher state of consciousness, while ending hunger for many.
