Hi KirbyJo,
I was not aware that people were able to post comments on my page until today, that is why I have not replied.
Thank you for your support and I an VERY impressed that a person your age is thinking about the environment. It makes me happy! I know there are a lot of people that don't consider the Earth as much as they should, but the best thing we can do is teach by example!
With respect,
Oksana

Is there a service structure in place to maintain solar related heating sources? How do the long term maintenance costs compare to standard systems like oil or electric heat?

School buildings should also be renovated to become more energy efficient and should collect rain water for landscape irrigation safing schools more money. Give the schools a complete retrofit to be come LEED certified.

I have been thinking about an endeavor like this for some time. I think the educational component is the most important - it is what will keep this movement going. You will need to help and encourage schools on this aspect, as it will be yet another thing that they will have to think about. I strongly encourage you to put some of the grant money expressly toward education and publicity, showing other schools in the region, and in the country, that this is a viable and effective alternative. Schools might be able to pay off some of the expense over time with their utility savings, making the grant go further.

EXCELLENT idea! And the thought that this could be used to teach and inspire our students about renewable resources and becoming more envronmentally conscious is critical too! Think of the amount of rsources each person in the US is responsible for consuming and consider the relative desert of knowledge that we impart to our children regarding the meaning of conservation and their individual impact upon the world. This could actually be one of the best projects for education in general, for Science education, for conservation of resources, for habitat, for wildlife, for .. you name it!
Positive points:
1) the amount of energy saved (or redirected making it available for other use) is really quite tremendous; 2) the cost savings over 5-10 years to the schools; 3) the opportunity - which should be made a mandatory requirement for schools receiving the funding - to use the solar systems as a catalist to teach environmental education and resource/energy conservation; 4) the ability to encourage additional use of this technology throughout the community by example. 5) finally, the ability to make children, our future consumers and voters, more conscientious about themselves, their community, country and their place in the world!

Negative points . NONE!

This is excellent. I'm thirteen years old, and my family is very enviromentally-concious, but I'm concerned about the rest of my generation, and whether they even bother to think about global warming and alternative energy. This will be a great way to educate them about they world we're entering and the duty we have to take care of it and everything that makes Earth its home.
